Happy Valentine!

It’s Valentine again. The stores are full of pink-wrapped chocolate boxes, pink cards, pink roses… some red ones too. There are also full of stressed out people (read men) trying to figure out what to buy, what would be good enough, what would be too much, or too little. All the restaurants bookings are full. We cannot wait for a great evening out, and then… thank god is over! Maybe a few more thoughts spent reminiscing, some notes comparing with friends, showing off a new jewelry, some moping over not getting what we wanted… the usual. And then it’s done, we are done, free to be ourselves again, until the next year.

I don’t like Valentine. Maybe just because I didn’t grow up with it. In fact, I didn’t even know it existed until I came to Canada. Still didn’t like it then. I cannot understand the whole hype around Valentine. Why are we supposed to be so focused on one day in a relationship? Isn’t it better to pay attention to it throughout the year? Why a box of pink-wrapped chocolates is so important? More important than anything else in between Valentines?

Well, I guess it is so much easier to go the a store and buy something pink, write a nice card and be on the best behaviour for the entire day! Much easier than paying attention to your partner all the time, respect them all the time, show love and appreciation all the time. Spending the money and saying “I love you, baby” once a year is easy. But does it actually work? Does it change anything, makes us happier and feeling loved?

I am afraid not. A good relationship takes much more than a box of chocolates. But this is something for another day, not for the Valentine weekend. For now, enjoy your night out.

Happy Valentine everyone!
